This statement discloses the privacy practices of the Macalester College LESTER portal. It is compliant with Macalester College campus-wide Web policies.
PRIVACY PHILOSOPHY
Macalester College Information Services believes in each individual's right to privacy and confidentiality with respect to use of information resources and services.
INFORMATION COLLECTION
In our effort to provide personalization with the LESTER portal service, we do ask for a limited amount of personal information (name, category, email address, etc) upon sign up. Once an account is created, we allow each user to store selected personal preferences (links to favorite library indexes, links to favorite web sites, etc.) in our databases in order to create a personalized and customizable interface. Only the individual user can update or change this information. In addition to the information provided by the individual at sign up, we also keep system-generated records of when the individual's account was created, the date that the individual logged into the site, and a tally of the total number of times that the individual has logged into the site. At any time, a user can request that their entire account be deleted from our databases.
INFORMATION USE
The personally identifiable information that we collect is used primarily to provide a personalized and customized web interface to library, research and campus-related services. Aggregate information that is not tied to specific individuals (e.g. the number of people who've chosen to include an individual service as part of their customized page) may also be used to improve the content of our web site, customer service, and to provide technical support. Occasionally, LESTER users may be contacted at the email address provided at sign up to inform them of updates to our web site and for marketing purposes. No information collected on this site will be shared with any other on-campus or off-campus organizations.
Remember My Login Option
By default, all users must log in to LESTER with a username and password each time they access the system. After 30 minutes of inactivity, a LESTER "session" will time out and the user will be required to log in again in order to access LESTER pages.
If you select the "Remember my login information" option on the LESTER login page, LESTER will remember your login name and you will no longer be required to enter your login and password each time you access the system. LESTER places an encrypted form of your username in a "cookie" file on your computer. This cookie is used by LESTER to log you in to the system each time you start a new LESTER session.
In order to prevent others from viewing your personalized LESTER pages, if you share a computer with others or use LESTER in a public/lab setting, please DO NOT select the "Remember my login information" option. In all cases where computers are shared, such as in computer labs or in the library reference area, use the "Log Out" option to close your LESTER session when you are finished using the system.
To cancel the "Remember my login information" option and require a username and password for login, change the "Remember My Login Information" setting on the User Profile page to No. This will remove the cookie from your browser.
